Step 1
Tram body or tram shelter?
Hong Kong's trams have run along Hong Kong Island's main east–west corridor since 1904, making them the city's most iconic moving media. There are two main types of tram advertising. Both follow the same core corridor on Hong Kong Island, but they work very differently.
Tram body: mobile and highly shareable
The whole double-decker tram becomes a “moving 3D billboard” with 100% visual ownership of its exterior, travelling through Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. From around HK$180,000/month, with 4 weeks as the basic rental unit. See Hong Kong tram body advertising for details.
Tram shelter: fixed, double-sided exposure
There are more than 100 tram stops across Hong Kong Island, set in the middle of main roads where they catch pedestrians and traffic on both sides. The standard lightbox is about 1.2m × 1.7m (similar to an MTR 4-Sheet or 6-Sheet), from around HK$100,000/week in 2-week cycles. See Hong Kong tram shelter advertising for details.
Step 2
Where does tram advertising reach?
Trams cover Hong Kong Island from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan, plus the Happy Valley loop. They do not reach Kowloon or the New Territories. If your target customers are mainly in Kowloon or the New Territories, consider bus advertising or MTR advertising instead.
Three prime stretches
- Central, Admiralty and Wan Chai business districts: running between banks and skyscrapers, reaching finance professionals, senior office workers and business decision-makers.
- Causeway Bay and Happy Valley:passing major malls such as SOGO and Times Square — the most eye-catching stretch for beauty, fashion, F&B and celebrity fan ads.
- Sai Ying Pun, Quarry Bay and Shau Kei Wan:reaching deep into Hong Kong Island's residential neighbourhoods and the Taikoo Place area, suited to long-term exposure for mass-market consumer products.
For tram stops, Paterson Street, Fuming Street and Percival Street in Causeway Bay, and Pedder Street and Bank Street in Central, are the top locations. There is only one premium shelter each in Causeway Bay and Central, so availability is extremely tight.
Step 3
Three things to note beyond the budget
- Peak season surcharge: a 15% surcharge applies during tram peak seasons, and the peak months vary by year, so please confirm with us before booking. Tram body prices already include production and installation.
- Book early: there are only just over 100 trams in Hong Kong, so commercial availability is limited. For both tram bodies and tram shelters, we recommend locking in your dates 1 to 2 months ahead; tram body ads also need time for design approval.
- Safety at fan photo spots: tram stops sit on safety islands in the middle of the road, so fan clubs organising photo meet-ups should remind members to watch out for traffic.
Step 4
How to choose the right format
MOTIV Recommends
- Creating buzz with a city-wide parade: choose a tram body wrap, booked by the month.
- Steady exposure in a specific area, with a QR code: choose a tram shelter — people waiting for a tram or at the traffic lights have 1–2 minutes, enough time to scan.
- Sustained presence on Hong Kong Island's busiest stretches: book both formats together for moving and fixed coverage.
