Step 1
Choose your position: concourse, platform or escalator?
How well an MTR ad performs depends largely on how long passengers stay in front of it. Each position suits different content.
Concourse: highest footfall, but people are on the move
Concourse lightboxes usually sit near the ticket gates or main exits, making them ideal for geo-targeted marketing alongside nearby shops. Passengers are walking, though, with an average viewing time of only 3–5 seconds — keep the copy short and the key visual bold.
Platform: the longest wait
Passengers waiting on the platform have 2 to 5 minutes of “captive” viewing time, so it suits more text, QR codes or content that needs a closer look. Platforms are darker, so use high-contrast, vivid colours.
Escalator: the steadiest viewing rhythm
On an escalator, passengers face forward for 15 to 30 seconds and see a new panel roughly every 2 seconds — perfect for a sequential story such as “problem → ambassador → product → counter location”.
Step 2
The 9 MTR advertising formats and their prices
1. 4-Sheet lightbox: the classic, lowest-cost entry
The most widely distributed format across MTR stations: the Network package has 185 lightboxes across 60 stations. A single panel starts from around HK$5,000/week (minimum 1 week) and a Network from around HK$80,000/week (minimum 3 weeks). Campaigns start on Saturdays, and quotes include printing and installation. Material size is 1010 × 1530 mm; visible display size is 990 × 1500 mm. See MTR 4-Sheet advertising for details.
2. Concourse 12-Sheet: three times the size of a 4-Sheet
Material size is 3030 × 1540 mm and display size 2990 × 1500 mm — about three times the size of a 4-Sheet — placed in prime sightlines at ticket gates and interchange corridors. A single panel starts from around HK$8,400/week (1–2 weeks) and a Network from around HK$150,000/week (2–3 week cycles). Quotes include printing and installation. Popular periods often need to be reserved months, or even half a year, in advance. See MTR Concourse 12-Sheet for details.
3. Concourse 12-Sheet Zone: own the whole corridor
Book every 12-Sheet in a designated concourse — such as Central, Causeway Bay (Times Square), Kowloon Tong (Festival Walk) or Diamond Hill — for 100% share of voice with no competitors in sight. From around HK$150,000/week; the Diamond Hill zone (6 lightboxes) has a lower entry budget. See Concourse 12-Sheet Zone for details.
4. 6-Sheet Bank: built for storyboard creative
A row of 6-Sheet lightboxes side by side, available only at Hong Kong, Causeway Bay and Kowloon Tong stations. From around HK$50,000/week, minimum 1 week, starting on Saturdays. Material size is 1,200 × 1,760 mm. There are metal frames between the lightboxes, so keep key words and faces away from the joins. See MTR 6-Sheet Bank for details.
5. Escalator Crown
From around HK$80,000/week. Standard packages run 6 or more panels per escalator in 2-week cycles; a line-wide Network starts from at least 137 panels. Major stations such as Causeway Bay, Central and Admiralty also offer digital, animated versions. See MTR Escalator Crown advertising for details.
6. Trackside 12-Sheet
Placed opposite the platform screen doors or on the trackside wall, where waiting passengers' eyes stay locked for long periods. From around HK$100,000/week. Networks run in 2–3 week cycles, while single locations can run flexibly for 1–2 weeks. See MTR Trackside 12-Sheet for details.
7. Digital Network
Includes 65-inch and 98-inch screens, large digital banners on platforms and concourses, and in-train TVs, from around HK$100,000/week. All MTR digital screens play without sound, so add clear subtitles. The 65-inch screens are fully digital with no printing or installation fees, but airtime is shared on rotation rather than owned by a single brand. See MTR Digital Network for details.
8. Poster on Wall
No lightbox frame: high-definition inkjet vinyl wraps an entire wall, which can stretch over ten metres. A single large wall starts from around HK$150,000/week (2–4 week cycles), and station domination packages range from HK$100,000 to over HK$500,000. Note that printing, installation and removal are charged separately, and artwork must be submitted for approval 3–4 weeks in advance. See MTR Poster on Wall advertising for details.
9. Platform Screen Door
Seen up close and head-on by waiting passengers — ideal for limited-time offers or QR codes. From around HK$150,000/week, minimum 3 sets of doors. Stickers can be up to 1 metre high and must leave the car and door numbers visible. See MTR Platform Screen Door advertising for details.
Step 3
Choosing stations: the three station categories
- Category 1 (prime stations): Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, Mong Kok, Hong Kong and Admiralty. The highest footfall and the most photo-sharing — hotly contested by commercial brands and large fan clubs, with the tightest availability.
- Category 2 (major commercial, residential and interchange stations): for example Tsuen Wan, Kowloon Tong, Kwun Tong, Wan Chai, Tai Koo and Kowloon, serving both office workers and large residential populations.
- Category 3 (high-density residential communities): for example Olympic, Tseung Kwan O, Kwai Fong and Prince Edward, reaching deep into large housing estates — suited to local shops or neighbourhood-focused campaigns.
Station categories vary slightly by format; see each format page for the full station list.
Step 4
How to choose the right format
MOTIV Recommends
- Limited budget, specific station: choose a single 4-Sheet, from around HK$5,000 per week.
- Premium image or a pop-up launch: choose a 12-Sheet or a Concourse Zone.
- Lots of information, longer viewing: choose a platform Trackside 12-Sheet or Platform Screen Door.
- A sequential story: choose Escalator Crown or a 6-Sheet Bank.
- Flexible creative, no printing: choose the Digital Network.
Fan Advertising
Fan clubs advertise on the MTR too
MTR lightboxes are one of the most popular media for fan clubs. Fans pool funds to rent a single 4-Sheet around an idol's birthday, a new album or a concert; bigger campaigns use life-size 12-Sheet portraits, an escalator “tunnel of stars”, or even an entire concourse zone. Fan ads go through the same approval process as commercial ads, and positions are first come, first served — Category 1 stations need to be locked in early. See the fan birthday advertising guide for details.
