Step 1
Set your budget: the three most common fan club scales
Entry level: a single MTR 4-Sheet lightbox
The most common approach is for a fan club to pool funds and rent a single 4-Sheet lightbox around the idol's birthday, a new album or a concert. A single panel starts from around HK$5,000/week, minimum 1 week, with printing and installation included. See MTR 4-Sheet advertising for details.
Step up: a Concourse 12-Sheet or a 6-Sheet Bank
A 12-Sheet is about three times the size of a 4-Sheet — big enough for a life-size portrait of your idol. A single panel starts from around HK$8,400/week, with printing and installation included. For a whole row of photo walls, choose a 6-Sheet Bank, available only at Hong Kong, Causeway Bay and Kowloon Tong stations. See MTR Concourse 12-Sheet and MTR 6-Sheet Bank for details.
Large-scale campaigns: escalators, Poster on Wall and tram bodies
Escalator Crown panels sit at eye level beside passengers, “escorting” them all the way up — many fans film the whole row of posters from the escalator. Poster on Wall has no lightbox frame, so it can carry a giant close-up or a life-size group photo wall over ten metres long. A full tram body wrap covers an entire double-decker tram with your idol, and fans share “tram-chasing guides” on social media. See MTR Escalator Crown, MTR Poster on Wall and tram body advertising for details.
For street-level exposure, a single bus shelter lightbox starts from around HK$10,000/week — the birthday ad in the photo above is on a bus shelter lightbox. For moving exposure across Kowloon and the New Territories, consider bus body advertising; KMB and Citybus quotes include production and installation. For prices and formats, see the bus advertising price guide.
Step 2
Choose your spot: making it easy for fans to take photos
- Choose the unpaid area outside the gates:to make photos easy for everyone, ask for a concourse position outside the ticket gates. Fans can see it without entering, and it won't block crowds on the platform or inside the gates.
- On platforms, choose the ends of the train: if you choose a platform lightbox, the positions at the front and rear of the train are usually less crowded, but passing trains will block photos.
- The idol's “signature station”: many fan clubs choose a station connected to their idol to create a personal touch.
- Category 1 prime stations are the most sought-after: Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, Mong Kok, Hong Kong and Admiralty have the highest footfall and photo-sharing. They are hotly contested by commercial brands and large fan clubs, with the tightest availability.
Step 3
What to know about booking and approval
MOTIV Tips
- MTR advertising is sold by the week and does not accept one-day bookings. Even to celebrate the birthday itself, you need at least 1 week.
- Fan ads go through the same approval process as commercial ads, so allow time for design review. Large lightboxes such as the 12-Sheet face especially strict visual review.
- Positions are first come, first served. Popular periods often need to be reserved months, or even half a year, ahead — book early around your idol's birthday.
- Most MTR formats start on Saturdays, so factor the start date in when planning around the birthday.
Not Just Idols
Personal birthdays and anniversaries work too
MTR 4-Sheet lightboxes are not just for fan clubs. JCDecaux also promotes the format for personal occasions such as wedding anniversaries, graduations and pet memorials. As long as the design is approved, individuals can book too.
